This coffee comes to us from Ninga Washing Station, run by Long Miles Coffee. This is the third washing station to be built in the remote coffee-growing region of Giku Hill in Burundi's Butanyerera Province. To say Ninga is remote is an understatement. This 10-kilometre plot of land is situated at 1,900 m.a.s.l. and flanked by the Nkokoma River. The coffee trees on this hill take up any of the space they can, stretching from the edge of the single-track dirt paths that weave through the hills to the doorsteps of farmers’ self-made mud-brick houses. Before this station was built in 2020, farmers from these villages had to carry their coffee for miles to the next village. Often on foot, and these bags of coffee cherries often weighed over 100 pounds.
Since its first season, the hill has produced elegant, complex coffees with layered, clean flavours. Long Miles Coffee's commitment to working more closely with this hill has never been stronger.
