A place for meaningful coffee and connection

We created a cafe attached to our roastery to provide a special coffee experience. Whether you love espresso-based drinks or competition-level pour-overs, our professional baristas deliver a slow coffee bar experience you’ll never forget. While you enjoy your coffee at Cafe Even, we invite you to relax, reflect, and realize that all experiences should be meaningful—even coffee.

A word from the architect

ABOUT THE SPACE

Inspired by the Client’s passion and expertise for coffee, Future Simple Studio created a bespoke interior that reflects the elaborate process of brewing the perfect coffee. Custom details and a textured palette invite the customer to sit back and enjoy every sip.

In 2024, coffee roaster Andrew Werbowyj brought his unique style and meticulous attention to detail to the local roasting scene in Montreal's MileEx neighborhood. When Future Simple Studio (FSS) was approached to create a bespoke interior for his new roastery and cafe, we sought qualities congruent with his values: raw, effortless, earthy, and precise.

Upon arrival, visitors are led through a curved entry wrapped in natural cork and framed by a silver mesh curtain into the space. The sunlight streaming deep into the cafe immediately guides your attention to a long concrete bar placed at an angle, subtly creating a dynamic spatial arrangement. The verticality of the ribbed concrete blocks surrounding the bar allows your gaze to travel from the floor to the ceiling, where a custom pendant designed by FSS hangs: a long plane of metal traced by a single linear light in its center.

The cafe’s hues, from light to dark brown, were inspired by the various stages of the roasting process. The rich brown hues of the interior create a warm and comforting atmosphere, encouraging conversation and contemplation rather than work and productivity.

The air is not only filled with the rich scents of roasting but also with the sounds. The roaster is at once tucked away and revealed through a translucent glass partition at the back of the cafe. Clients are invited to catch a glimpse of the shadow theater that is the roasting process. This direct connection to the usually hidden parts of the craft is defined through a raw and honest material palette and textures reminiscent of coffee grounds.

Even Cafe is known to the neighborhood—the space with the garage door is always open. Neighbors, regulars, and dogs are always encouraged to linger and spill onto the street, blurring the lines between inside and out and emphasizing one of Even's major objectives: building community.
