La Lia is a farm and micromill located in Tarrazu, Costa Rica. It is owned and operated by brothers Luis and Oscar Monge, who are third-generation coffee growers. The farm has been in the family for nearly 70 years. In 2008, the brothers took over the farm and established a micromill. The name "La Lia" is a tribute to their mother, Lia. The brothers are committed to growing and improving the quality of their crops, as they have been taught by their parents and grandparents. Their dedication is evident in this lot of yellow typica.
The 60-hectare farm consists of seven plots, with elevations reaching up to 2,100 meters, allowing slow cherry ripening and high sugar concentration. Yellow Typica is a rare coffee variety known for its bright yellow cherries that ripen to a golden hue. It has gained popularity in Central America. After harvest, the yellow typica cherries are partially depulped, leaving mucilage intact, before drying on raised beds for consistency. The Monge brothers oversee every step, sometimes extending drying to enhance flavour. Their meticulous approach at La Lia micromill ensures high-quality, distinctive coffee.
This is our second time having coffee from La Lia on the menu, as it was one of our favourites when we opened. This coffee offers a nice cup with a sweet acidity and a lot of fruits and floral notes, including melon and stone fruits.
