Allan Oviedo, a second-generation coffee grower, inherited half of his father's land about 20 years ago. Initially he was selling cherries to a local mill at low prices. At the same time, he worked as a taxi driver in San José to save money for farm improvements. Over time, he invested in processing his own coffee and built a micromill, named Don Joel in honor of his father.
Don Joel is located in the scenic West Valley. It is just 12 hectares but produces a respectable amount of coffee. Allan has been the owner of Don Joel for about 10 years. The SL-28 variety was selected in the 1930’s in Kenya for it’s drought resistance but it also demonstrated hardiness, high yields, and exceptional cup quality. It has since spread to countries in Central and South America.
For this lot, the cherries are depulped and mechanically washed. After processing, the coffee was moved to a new drum dryer which is aids in the efficient and effective drying of the coffee, which is becoming increasingly challenging due to the effects of climate change.
In this coffee we find many jammy flavours, stone fruit, and a sweet and bright profile.
